Have you ever wondered why people wish on eyelashes?
Apparently, the tradition of wishing on a fallen eyelash comes from common folklore during the 19th century.
The tradition of wishing on a fallen eyelash comes from common folklore during the 19th century.
Wishers would place the fallen eyelash on the back of their hand before throwing it over their shoulder as they imagined what they wanted.
But, if the eyelash got stuck, supposedly, their wish would not come true.
A Cornish schoolgirl version dictates that the eyelash should be placed on the tip of the nose; if she blows it off, she’ll get her wish.
Apparently, while the custom may seem innocent enough, blowing away an eyelash also protects the wisher from witchcraft and even the devil.
It is said that the devil would try to collect as much human hair and eyelashes as possible to gain power over a person – so by blowing it away the wisher would also get more power to get rid of the devil.
